| Summary: The Viper GC is a very capable modchip for copying Nintendo Gamecube games. I recommend it. You can buy a ViperGC mod now from Divineo Modchips | ||||||||||||||
| Full News Story: Okay, I know my site is about Xbox games, but the recently released Viper GC Gamecube modchip is a big deal becuase the Viper GC is the first Nintendo Gamecube mod that allows Gamecube modders to copy Gamecube games. It's a really amazing product. I got my hands on a Viper chip recently, so I wanted to post my impressions. The Viper chip does what it says - It allows Gamecube modders to hack their Gamecube for copying games. Packaging: I bought my Viper GC modchip from Divineo Mods (my favorite place for modchips). It arrived quickly and in excellent packaging. Both the modchip and the external programmer were safely wrapped in anti-static bags, surrounded by bubble wrap, and in a box with styrofoam pellets. The secure packaging is just one reason why I always recommend Divineo Modchips. Installation: Installing the Viper GC is relatively easy. There are installation diagrams, pictures, and instructions on the Divineo site at the Viper GC page. Installing the Viper chip was definitely easier than the first Xbox modchip I ever installed. The toughest part was opening the Gamecube case. To open the Gamecube case there are several very deep screws that must be removed. There is a tool called the Gamebit which will allow you to easily remove the screws, but of course, I didn't have a Gamebit. I used a long skinny screwdriver with an adhesive (sort of like a sticky-glue) on the end to grip the screws. Eventually, I was able to remove the screws. This was the toughest part of the Viper GC modchip installation. In total, there were four wires that had to be soldered. Purple, Red, Black, and Yellow. Soldering the first three is pretty simple and only took a minute. The Yellow wire had to be soldered just underneath the edge of the heat-sinc. The heat-sinc can be removed, but I'm the kind of guy that always takes the shortcut, so I just very carefully soldered the yellow wire into place with the heat-sinc still attached. There are multiple versions of the Nintendo Gamecube, and the ViperGC will work with all of them. However, depending on the version, you may have to remove the Gamecube's PCB to solder the wires. I have an A/B version, so I didn't have to remove the PCB. I don't think this would've been very difficult though. You have to bypass the lid detection by plugging two blue gambe into your chip. This is really simple, but the gamecube won't work if you don't do this, so don't forget. The entire installation including opening the gamecube case, removing the laser unit, soldering the connections, and bypassing the lid detection took about an hour. Now that I know what I'm doing, I bet I could complete the job in 20 minutes. Programming:Using the programmer you can flash your Viper GC with a new bios. This was really easy, I just connected the external programmer to my notebook pc, and using the flasher software wrote the bios. Just be sure to firmly connect the chip cable to the programmer. The bios for the gamecube is called the Cobra bios. The filename I used was cobra02.vgc. This is the viper bios that you will use to overwrite the default nintendo gamecube bios. Conclusion:I am very happy with the Viper GC modchip. It performs as advertised. Playing burned Gamecube games is easy now. You can boot to the Cobra bios on the ViperGC, or you can boot to the original bios. Installing the chip was pretty straightforward. If you want to hack your Nintendo gamecube, this is the best way to do it right now, and I highly recommend that you check out Divineo Modchips if you want to buy the Viper GC modchip. |
