Early Review of Xbox 360: It's Sick! |

| Summary: After spending a week with my new Xbox 360 I am delighted to report that it is freak'n fantastic! I can't wait to buy an Xbox 360 modchip for this sucker. | ||||||||||||||
| Full News Story: Last week I waited outside in the freezing cold for the better part of the night and early morning to be one of the first consumers to own an Xbox 360 console. I caught a cold and felt like crap the next day, but you know what? It was worth it. The Xbox 360 Rocks! After reading early reviews my expectations were high, but not too high. I am pleased to report that these expectations were exceeded. The Xbox 360 improves on everything that sucked about the original Xbox. My favorite features are the HDTV compatibility and the new Xbox Live integration. With an HDTV-ready television set, the Xbox 360 really comes alive. The difference between playing the console on a regular television vs an HDTV television is extraordinary (I tried both just to test). With HDTV, you really feel like the Xbox 360 is a next generation video game console. On a regular television, I thought the games on the Xbox 360 looked only marginally better than regular Xbox games. Xbox 360 online functionality is also killer. You may not remember, but Xbox Live did not debut on the original Xbox until nearly one year after the video game console was released. I'm not saying that Xbox Live on the original Xbox was an afterthought, but it wasn't exactly a seamless integration. Xbox Live on the Xbox 360 is different. Online functionality is fully integrated. Managing online friends is much easier. You can also compare your gamer rank in various games to other players, even when you're not playing the particular game at issue. For example, when playing an opponent on PGR3, I can compare my gamer ranking with my opponent's for other games besides PGR3, such as Call of Duty or Kameo. This is cool because it makes me feel better when he's kicking my ass at Project Gotham, but I can see that I blow him away Kameo. I bought four games for my Xbox 360, but so far I have only had time to play two of them (Project Gotham 3, and Kameo). I'm still waiting to try Perfect Dark Zero and Need For Speed. I don't want to open them until I have time to sit down and fully enjoy them (I'm a little weird like that). I can say however that PGR3 and Kameo are both totally rad. PGR3 is the absolute best racing game I have ever played on any video game console. Kameo is so cool because it is entertaining for non-gamers, such as my girlfriend. We both sat down and took turns for several hours. The graphics in Kamro blow me away every time I play it. I can't wait until the Xbox 360 gets hacked. I hope to see an early Xbox 360 modchip or other hack within 6-12 months. Most systems are hacked within this time period and despite Microsoft's emphasis on security I really do not expect the Xbox 360 to be any different. There is a lot of interest in the modchip business. Many modchip manufactuers and modchip sellers are already chomping at the bit to get an Xbox 360 modchip to market. At least one serious Xbox 360 hacking project is already underway. The goal of the Free60 Project is to port an open source operating system such as Linux to the Xbox 360. This is a terrific goal, and I will monitor the developments closely. One of the most entertaining things I ever did with an original Xbox was turn it into a Linux based web server. I hope I can soon do the same with the Xbox 360. If you have the opportunity, don't hesitate to buy an Xbox 360. They are tough to come by at the moment, but they are worth every penny. You won't feel ripped off even if you have to pay a reasonable premium for the console on Ebay. It's that good. And, with any luck an Xbox 360 modchip will be for sale soon. |
